Gijs van Poecke is een beeldhouwer die de grens opzoekt tussen kunst, mythologie en de rauwe energie van subculturen. Zijn werk draait om wat hij ‘moderne totems’ noemt: imposante sculpturen die aanvoelen als wezens uit een andere wereld.

Van Poecke ziet zichzelf als een moderne sjamaan die beelden uit zijn onderbewustzijn naar de realiteit haalt. Hij mixt klassieke filosofie en oude mythen moeiteloos met invloeden uit de Heavy Metal-scene en Manga. Voor Van Poecke is de totempaal het begin van de beeldhouwkunst: een drager van energie en een zoektocht naar verbinding met onze omgeving en ons eigen bewustzijn.

Wat zijn kunst toegankelijk maar ook spannend maakt, is de ‘rock-'n-roll attitude’. Hij plaatst zijn beelden vaak zonder sokkel direct op de grond, waardoor ze een krachtige, bijna dreigende aanwezigheid in de ruimte hebben. Met zijn installaties creëert hij een mystieke ervaring die de toeschouwer dwingt om stil te staan bij de ongetemde krachten van onze eigen verbeelding. 

Zijn carrière is in een stroomversnelling geraakt met recente hoogtepunten op de kunstbeurs BIG ART 2025 en in het Cobra Museum.

Gijs van Poecke studeerde in 2023 af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht.

Gijs van Poecke is a sculptor who explores the boundary between art, mythology, and the raw energy of subcultures. His work revolves around what he calls “modern totems”: imposing sculptures that feel like beings from another world.

Van Poecke sees himself as a modern shaman who brings images from his subconscious into reality. He effortlessly blends classical philosophy and ancient myths with influences from the Heavy Metal scene and Manga. For Van Poecke, the totem pole marks the beginning of sculpture: a carrier of energy and a search for connection with our surroundings and our own consciousness.

What makes his art both accessible and exciting is its “rock-’n-roll attitude.” He often places his sculptures directly on the ground without a pedestal, giving them a powerful, almost threatening presence within the space. Through his installations, he creates a mystical experience that compels the viewer to reflect on the untamed forces of our own imagination.

His career has gained significant momentum with recent highlights at the art fair BIG ART 2025 and at the Cobra Museum.

Gijs van Poecke graduated in 2023 from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.
