Gijs van Poecke ziet zijn eigen kunstenaarschap als de moderne interpretatie van de Sjamaan. Voor hem is de totempaal het begin geweest van de beeldhouwkunst. Hij trekt de vergelijking tussen een totem en een mythologisch beeld. Zijn kunstwerken benadert hij daarom ook als totems. Omdat hij beelden vanuit zijn onderbewustzijn, dat in zijn hoofd nog fantasie is, naar de werkelijkheid brengt beïnvloed hij op die manier weer het onderbewuste van de kijker.

Hij vindt het belangrijk dat zijn werk altijd een mythische potentie heeft. Hij speelt met de abstracte en mystieke functionaliteit van de voorwerpen om zo de fantasie van de kijker te prikkelen. De kijker wordt uitgenodigd zijn eigen interpretaties aan de beelden toe te voegen om zo een persoonlijke connectie met het werk te leggen. Voor van Poecke is de mythologische potentie van belang om een krachtige, bovenmenselijke energie bij de kijker te genereren. Aan de hand van kleine details brengt van Poecke veel dynamiek in zijn werk waardoor de beelden in het hoofd van de kijker beginnen te functioneren en bewegen. 

Zijn werk haalt voornamelijk inspiratie uit de filosofie van Joseph Campbell en het totemistische principe van Émile Durkheim. Hij kijkt naar verschillende mythes van verschillende plekken en verbind deze met de inspiratie die hij haalt uit manga, Zijn ervaring in de Heavy Metal wereld en films.

Gijs van Poecke sees his artistry as the modern interpretation of the Shaman. To him it was the totem that was the starting point of sculpture. He draws a connection between a mythological image (painting, stories or statues) and a totem. Because of this he would like to approach his sculptures as modern totems. Because he brings the sculptures from this subconscious, which is at first then still fantasy in his own world, to reality he indirectly influences the subconscious of the viewer. 

To him it is important that his work always has a mythological potential. He plays with an abstract and mystical functionality of the objects to awaken the fantasy of the viewer. The viewer becomes invited to give his own interpretations to the work and build a personal connection. For Van Poecke is the mythological potential crucial to generate a powerful and almost inhuman energy within the viewer. Through little details Van Poecke brings a lot of dynamic into his work through which within the mind of the spectator the sculptures start moving. 

His work draws mostly inspiration from the philosophy of Joseph Campbell and the totemistic principle from Emile Durkheim. He looks at different mythes from different places and time periods and combines them with inspiration from, Manga, the Heavy Metal scene and movies.
